Soar into spring with one of Austin’s oldest traditions!
Since 1929, the ABC Kite Fest has been Austin’s most beloved, family-friendly, spring tradition. Founded by the Exchange Club of Austin, the festival is designed to foster energy and creativity. What started as a simple kite contest to keep children active has grown into the longest-running festival of its kind in the nation, boasting day-long activities for all ages, including the traditional kite flying contest and showcase.
From its humble beginnings at Lamar Park, near the present-day intersection of Congress Ave. & E Cesar Chavez St, to becoming the first festival at Zilker Park in 1936, this beloved tradition has brought families together for nearly 100 years. Today, with support from ABC Home and Commercial Services and the Friends of the ABC Kite Fest nonprofit, the festival continues to celebrate imagination, community and the timeless magic of flight.
